News Today: Rice and coconuts sold at controlled prices in Sri Lanka to counter shortages and ensure market stability.
Rice and coconuts will now be sold at controlled prices through Lanka Sathosa, as announced by Trade, Commerce, Food Security, and Co-operative Development Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe in Parliament yesterday. Starting today, 200,000 kilograms of rice will be available daily at Rs. 220 per kilogram.
Additionally, within two weeks, coconuts will be sold in suburban areas through Lanka Sathosa at Rs. 130 per nut. These measures aim to stabilize market prices and ensure affordability amidst rising demand and shortages.
The government has lifted rice import restrictions until December 20 to address the rice shortage caused by heavy rains damaging paddy cultivation. Minister Samarasinghe also mentioned that rice mill owners have agreed to supply 200,000 kilos of rice daily to maintain consistent availability.
To counter the coconut shortage, the government plans to release one million coconuts to the market in the next two to three weeks. These steps are designed to prevent exploitation and provide relief to consumers.
The Minister emphasized that past efforts by individuals and institutions to create artificial shortages have contributed to the current challenges. The government is engaging in discussions with these parties to resolve the issues while remaining ready to take necessary actions if needed.
