Security Heightened in Colombo Amid Travel Advisory Alert Today

News Today: Security in Colombo, Weligama, and Ella Today

Security in Colombo has been ramped up, alongside key tourist areas Weligama and Ella, following heightened security alerts. A senior Defense source reported that the Special Task Force (STF) has undertaken robust security operations, especially after the U.S. Embassy issued a travel advisory warning of a potential terrorist threat. Along with Colombo, Arugam Bay has also seen reinforced security measures since the first alerts weeks ago.

The STF, assisted by intelligence officers, has deployed personnel throughout vital locations, including Jewish prayer houses known as ‘Chabad Houses’ and business establishments operated by Israeli nationals. Additional roadblocks in Weligama aim to safeguard these areas as part of the intensified operation.

Minister Vijitha Herath confirmed that three Sri Lankan nationals were apprehended in connection to these security threats targeting Israeli nationals in Arugam Bay. While specific details about the suspects remain undisclosed to preserve investigation integrity, Herath reassured that thorough security measures are being executed to protect tourists.

Meanwhile, Israel’s national security council issued a warning advising Israeli tourists to leave certain tourist areas in Sri Lanka, resulting in the departure of 22 Israeli nationals yesterday. Security is expected to remain intensified until further notice, with measures in place to ensure the safety of both locals and tourists.
