SJB Pledges Cost of Living Relief with President’s Support

News Today: SJB leader pledges to Cost of Living relief with IMF amendments

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) leader Sajith Premadasa voiced his intent to collaborate with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to address the rising Cost of Living (COL) in Sri Lanka if SJB secures a parliamentary majority in the upcoming General Election. Premadasa expressed concerns over several proposals agreed upon with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) by the previous government. He emphasized that he would amend these terms with the President’s support, focusing on reducing the COL and making essential goods more affordable for citizens.

During a public address in Colombo, Premadasa pointed out that the people of Sri Lanka are eager to see a reduction in certain direct and indirect taxes on essential items, such as rice, wheat flour, dhal, milk powder, and canned fish. Lowering these taxes would, he noted, decrease prices and make daily necessities more affordable. By adjusting these IMF-influenced policies, the SJB leader believes a tangible difference can be made in easing financial burdens.

Premadasa added that SJB’s objectives align with the people’s expectations and assured that, with the President’s collaboration, the party aims to achieve meaningful reforms to benefit citizens. By reducing taxes on essential goods, SJB’s strategy is to improve living standards and tackle inflation effectively.
