News Today: SJB to Support Motion Against Suspended IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon

Colombo, Sri Lanka – The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has announced its support for the motion to suspend former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon, citing concerns over his controversial appointment and alleged misconduct.

SJB Strongly Opposes IGP Appointment

SJB leader and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa stated that Tennakoon’s appointment as Inspector General of Police (IGP) was in violation of the Constitution. He reaffirmed that the SJB had opposed the appointment from the beginning, criticizing the former President and Speaker for approving his selection.

Premadasa further emphasized that Sri Lanka needs a police force free from political influence and that Tennakoon’s suspension was a necessary step toward restoring accountability in law enforcement.

NPP Calls for Removal of Suspended IGP

Meanwhile, the National People’s Power (NPP) has also taken action against Deshabandu Tennakoon, formally submitting a motion to Speaker Jagath Wickramarathne seeking his permanent removal.

A group of NPP MPs handed over the motion in Parliament yesterday, urging immediate action on the matter.

Legal Proceedings Against Tennakoon

In addition to political opposition, Tennakoon faces legal trouble. He has been remanded until April 3rd by the Matara Magistrate’s Court in connection with a shooting incident near a hotel in Weligama’s Pelena area in 2023.

The case has drawn significant public attention, with many calling for greater transparency and accountability within Sri Lanka’s law enforcement leadership.

As Parliament prepares to debate the motion, the political landscape remains tense, with the SJB and NPP pushing for systemic reforms in the appointment and oversight of top law enforcement officials.
