News Today: Immigration Department Receives 50,000 New Passports for Demand Surge
The Immigration and Emigration Department of Sri Lanka has announced the arrival of 50,000 passports under the ‘P’ category, as per their procurement agreement with a tender-winning company. This supply is the first of several shipments, with an additional 100,000 passports expected by the end of November and another 150,000 passports scheduled for December. The Department has also begun procuring more passports to keep up with increasing demand.
To address the growing need for passports, the Immigration Department currently issues 1,600 passports daily. In December, this number is set to gradually increase, ensuring that the department can better meet daily requirements. Alongside this expansion, the Department is finalizing a streamlined online booking system, which will enable passport applicants to book appointments with set dates and times conveniently. This system aims to make the application process smoother and more efficient, accommodating the rising number of applicants.
This initiative by Sri Lanka’s Immigration and Emigration Department will ensure a steady passport supply and improve the overall experience for applicants. As part of its mission, the Department continues to develop solutions for a fast-growing applicant base, ensuring prompt and reliable passport services.
