Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya of Sri Lanka recently met with Chinese President Xi Jinping during her visit to China to attend the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women. The high-level meeting underscored the strong and longstanding friendship between the two nations, highlighting the importance of bilateral cooperation.
President Xi Jinping emphasized that China and Sri Lanka have maintained robust relations founded on the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, describing the partnership as a model of mutual respect and collaboration between countries. “China and Sri Lanka are fellow travelers on the path toward development and revitalization and good partners in win-win cooperation,” President Xi stated, reaffirming Sri Lanka’s significance in China’s neighborhood diplomacy.
The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in critical sectors under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), including the port economy, modern agriculture, digital and green economies, and tourism. President Xi reiterated China’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka in safeguarding its sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, while pursuing development paths suited to its national context.
Both leaders also emphasized the need for enhanced collaboration in law enforcement and security to combat transnational crimes, such as cross-border gambling and fraud. They agreed to deepen cooperation in multilateral platforms, including the United Nations, promoting an “equal and orderly multipolar world” and a more inclusive form of globalization.
The meeting highlighted shared goals for advancing mutual development, strengthening solidarity among Global South nations, and fostering sustainable economic growth. Analysts note that this visit marks a pivotal moment in Sri Lanka-China relations, strengthening strategic ties, and opening new avenues for cooperation across trade, security, technology, and sustainable development initiatives.
