Beira Lake Cleanup with Solar Electric Boats

News Today: Beira Lake cleanup project using solar-powered electric boats Colombo 2025

A groundbreaking environmental initiative has been launched to clean Beira Lake using modern solar-powered electric boats. According to the Western Province Governor’s Media Unit, this eco-friendly program is designed to collect and remove up to 3,000 kilograms of waste per day, making it one of the most ambitious lake-cleaning operations in Colombo.

The project, currently in its pilot phase, utilizes specially designed electric boats that operate on renewable energy. By harnessing solar power, the initiative reduces reliance on fossil fuels while addressing the long-standing issue of waste accumulation in Beira Lake.

Authorities confirmed that the program will initially operate with one boat, but plans are underway to expand to four electric boats in the near future. The larger vision is to create a sustainable, long-term solution for restoring the health of Beira Lake and its surrounding ecosystem.

The initiative aims not only to improve water quality but also to restore aquatic biodiversity, enhance the lake’s scenic beauty, and safeguard public health. Since Beira Lake is a central landmark in Colombo, its revival is expected to positively impact both residents and tourists.

Environmentalists have welcomed the project, noting that innovative, renewable-energy-based approaches like this are critical for addressing Sri Lanka’s urban environmental challenges. If successful, the Beira Lake cleanup could serve as a model for other polluted water bodies across the country.
