Major Update: Sri Lanka’s Presidential Elections Declared End July

News Today: Sri Lanka’s Presidential Elections Declared by End of July

According to an official from the Election Commission, Sri Lanka’s Presidential Elections are scheduled between September 17th and October 18th, 2024. This official announcement will be made at the end of this month. The Constitution mandates that the Presidential Election must conclude at least one month and not more than two months before the current presidential term ends on November 18. Therefore, the election must be completed before October 18 to elect a new President within the stipulated time frame.

The Commission’s Chairman, R.M.A.L. Rathnayake, informed reporters that nominations would be accepted from prospective candidates between 16 to 21 days. Subsequently, polling should occur between four to six weeks after nominations close.

In preparation for the election, the Commission has scheduled a meeting with the Inspector General of Police, the Postmaster General, and the Government Printer to discuss the arrangements. “We have to discuss security arrangements, postal delivery of poll cards, other related documents, and printing them today,” said Rathnayake.

This meeting aims to ensure all necessary measures are in place for the smooth conduct of the election, including securing polling stations and timely distribution of polling cards and related materials. The collaboration between various departments is crucial for maintaining the integrity and efficiency of the electoral process.

The upcoming election is a significant event for Sri Lanka, as it will determine the country’s leadership for the next term. The Election Commission’s efforts are focused on ensuring a transparent and fair election process, adhering to constitutional requirements and deadlines.
