Advanced Telecommunication Technology in Sri Lanka Gets a Boost with New Bill
The Committee on Public Finance has approved the Sri Lanka Telecommunications (Amendment) Bill, enabling consumers to enjoy advanced telecommunication technology. This is the first amendment to the law in 28 years, aiming to regulate the industry in line with technological advancements.
State Minister Kanaka Herath stated that the bill’s enactment would regulate satellite-based internet services in Sri Lanka, among other innovations. The Parliamentary Media Unit’s statement highlighted the bill’s approval during a recent committee meeting chaired by Dr. Harsha de Silva. The meeting included MPs from both sides, officials from the Attorney General’s Department, and representatives from the Technology, Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC), and other institutions.
The Speaker recently announced the Supreme Court’s recommendations regarding the bill, suggesting modifications to certain sections. This development marks a significant step towards modernizing Sri Lanka’s telecommunication infrastructure and ensuring consumers benefit from the latest technological advancements.
