Sri Lanka’s Air Quality Rated as ‘Good’ in Most Cities

News Today: Air quality in Sri Lanka remains at a good level, with only moderate pollution in Jaffna, Kurunegala, Galle, and Puttalam.

The Vehicular Emission Test Trust Fund from the Department of Traffic has announced that air quality levels across Sri Lanka remain at a good level, with only moderate pollution observed in a few cities.

According to their latest report, the air quality index (AQI) in most cities ranged between 26 and 56, indicating minimal pollution and healthy atmospheric conditions. However, moderate air pollution was detected in Jaffna, Kurunegala, Galle, and Puttalam, where slightly higher levels of pollutants were recorded.

Peak Air Pollution Hours Identified

The highest levels of air pollution were observed during:

  • 7:30 AM – 8:30 AM (morning rush hour)
  • 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM (midday emissions peak)

These periods coincide with heavy vehicular traffic, indicating that transportation emissions significantly impact air quality.

Air Quality Expected to Remain Stable

Officials predict that air quality in most cities will remain at a good level over the next 24 hours, with only slight fluctuations in urban areas. Environmental experts suggest that favorable weather conditions and improved pollution control measures have contributed to maintaining good air quality across Sri Lanka.

While the overall outlook remains positive, authorities urge the public to monitor AQI levels, especially in moderately affected areas like Jaffna and Galle, where pollution levels could rise due to increased industrial activity and traffic congestion.

Government Efforts to Improve Air Quality

Sri Lanka has been actively implementing vehicular emission control programs and environmental monitoring systems to ensure sustainable air quality levels. Experts highlight the importance of reducing vehicle emissions, promoting green energy, and enhancing public transportation to further improve the country’s air quality.

With continuous monitoring and eco-friendly policies, Sri Lanka is making strides in curbing air pollution and ensuring a healthier environment for its citizens.
