Major Education Reforms Announced by Government for 2026

The Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, announced in parliament yesterday that the government is actively preparing for a major overhaul of Sri Lanka’s education system. These reforms aim to modernize learning structures and enhance educational standards nationwide.

Dr. Amarasuriya highlighted that the new education reforms will be built around five key pillars, ensuring a comprehensive transformation of the system:

  1. Introduction of a New Syllabus – Modernizing the curriculum to align with global educational trends and practical skill development.
  2. Human Resource Development – Enhancing teacher training, recruitment, and professional development to improve the quality of education.
  3. Infrastructure Development – Upgrading school facilities, digital classrooms, and learning resources across the country.
  4. Public Awareness and Education – Engaging parents and communities in the importance of education reform.
  5. Proper Assessment and Evaluation – Implementing new student evaluation techniques to measure academic progress effectively.

Implementation Timeline for Education Reforms

Dr. Amarasuriya further stated that these groundbreaking reforms will be introduced for the first time in 2026, targeting students in Grade 1 and Grade 6 as the initial phase of implementation. The plan aims to gradually expand the new system across all grades in the following years.
