News Today: Local Government Election Preparations in Full Swing Across Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is gearing up for the Local Government elections scheduled for Tuesday, May 6, with the Election Commission Chairman R.M.A.L. Ratnayake confirming that all logistical and security arrangements are in place. Voting will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. across 339 Local Government bodies nationwide.
A total of 17,156,338 registered voters are eligible to cast their ballots, selecting representatives from 75,589 candidates representing various political parties and independent groups. Each voter will receive a single ballot paper listing only party names, symbols, and independent group details. Voters must mark an “X” next to their preferred party or group—no other markings are allowed.
Vote counting will be carried out at the ward level, with results compiled and verified at district offices before being officially announced. Most wards will have one polling station, while larger wards may have more.
The official campaign period ended at midnight on May 3, and a strict silence period is in effect until the close of polls. The Election Commission and Police have warned all parties and candidates against any further campaigning. Legal action will be taken against anyone violating the silence period, including those distributing posters or banners.
To ensure election security, over 65,000 Police officers have been deployed across the country. Military support will be activated if required to maintain law and order during this critical time.
The People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) has stationed around 3,000 election observers across the country to monitor compliance and transparency. Their Executive Director, Rohana Hettiarachchi, stated that both mobile and stationary teams are prepared to report on incidents as they arise.
In addition, the Election Commission has introduced media reporting restrictions to ensure fair coverage. These blackout periods begin on May 4 at 2 p.m., followed by further restrictions on May 5 and throughout Election Day at various time blocks. Media outlets have been strongly urged to comply.
