News Today: Severe Rice Shortages of Local Rice Varieties for New Year
The Maradagahamula Rice Traders’ Association warns of a severe shortage of local rice varieties, especially Nadu and white raw rice. This shortage is expected to disrupt the preparation of traditional milk rice for the New Year celebrations.
Despite the government allowing rice imports and over 750,000 metric tonnes already brought into the country, traders are reluctant to sell at regulated prices. Nadu rice, priced at Rs. 225 per kilo wholesale and Rs. 230 retail, remains scarce. Traders claim that rice trading has been politicized, leaving consumers struggling.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake recently directed regulated prices for Nadu rice, but shortages persist. The government also removed import restrictions, yet traders argue that high import duties of Rs. 65 per kilo add to the crisis.
The Rice Traders’ Association President, B.K. Ranjith, confirmed shortages of Nadu and raw rice, with other varieties priced above regulations. Wholesalers blame price controls for their reluctance to purchase imported rice.
Traders demand a reduction in import duties and practical solutions to the issue. Without immediate intervention, preparing milk rice—a staple dish for Sri Lankans—may become a challenge for many households this New Year.
