Sri Lanka Stuns England with Consolation Win

News Today: Sri Lanka beats England in third Test match, Nissanka shines with unbeaten century.

Sri Lanka secured a remarkable victory against England in the third Test, claiming a consolation prize with an eight-wicket win. Pathum Nissanka’s unbeaten century (127*) led Sri Lanka to chase down a target of 219 at The Oval before lunch on the fourth day. Angelo Mathews contributed 32*, helping Sri Lanka achieve their first Test win in England since 2014.

Though England won the three-match series 2-1, this defeat marked the end of their hopes for a home clean sweep. Nissanka was named Player of the Match for his superb batting, having also made 64 in the first innings. “It was a great opportunity to play in England, and I enjoyed that innings,” Nissanka said.

Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva celebrated the moment as one of the happiest in his career. After seven straight Test defeats against England, Sri Lanka finally broke the streak.

England’s batting faltered, collapsing in both innings, while Sri Lanka’s bowlers, led by Lahiru Kumara and Vishwa Fernando, dismantled their opposition. Despite Pope’s 154 in the first innings and Jamie Smith’s 67 in the second, England struggled to maintain their advantage.
