News Today: Sri Lanka’s 77th Independence Day Held at Lower Cost

The Sri Lankan government has made arrangements for the 77th Independence Day ceremony with a reduced budget while ensuring public participation.

Sri Lanka is set to commemorate its 77th Independence Day on February 4, 2025, at Independence Square under the theme “Let’s Align for National Revival”. This year’s celebrations will be conducted with significantly reduced costs, aiming for greater public involvement while minimizing inconvenience.

Speaking at a press conference in Colombo, Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government Minister Professor Chandana Abeyratne announced that the government is prioritizing a budget-friendly approach to the national event.

Military Parade and Display Adjustments

Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal (Retired) Sampath Thuiyacontha stated that this year’s military parade will feature 1,873 personnel, marking a reduction of 1,511 participants compared to last year.

Additionally, armored vehicles from the Tri-Forces will not be included in this year’s parade, further reducing expenses.

In 2024, a total of 19 aircraft were used for aerial displays, whereas in 2025, only three aircraft will participate in a ceremonial flyover to display the national flag in the sky. However, the traditional 25-gun salute by the Sri Lanka Navy from a warship at noon will continue as part of the celebrations.

Significant Budget Reductions for Independence Day

The Sri Lankan government has allocated Rs. 80 million for the 77th Independence Day celebrations, a considerably lower budget compared to previous years.

Officials emphasized that despite the cost reductions, the ceremony will uphold its patriotic spirit while ensuring the public remains an integral part of the event.

By streamlining expenses and focusing on essential elements, Sri Lanka aims to mark its Independence Day with dignity and national pride, even under financial constraints.
