News Today: Supreme Court Dismisses FR Petition by Ravi Seneviratne
The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has dismissed the Fundamental Rights petition filed by Public Security Ministry Secretary Ravi Seneviratne. The petition challenged his arrest following a road accident in 2023.
Ravi Seneviratne, formerly a Senior DIG in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), was serving as the Public Security Ministry Secretary at the time of the incident. He was arrested on October 28, 2023, after a road accident occurred within the Wellawatte Police Division.
The Supreme Court, comprising Justices S. Thurairaja, A.H.M.D. Nawaz, and Priyantha Fernando, upheld the Attorney General’s preliminary objections regarding the maintainability of the petition. The bench ruled that the petition could not proceed and subsequently dismissed it.
This dismissal highlights the judicial process in addressing petitions challenging arrests, ensuring that procedural objections are carefully reviewed. The decision underscores the balance between legal accountability and individual rights.
This news marks another significant case under the purview of the judiciary in 2023. It reflects the commitment to uphold judicial standards while examining legal disputes.
