Strong Thundershowers Expected Today Across Sri Lanka

News Today: Thundershowers and heavy rainfall forecast in Sri Lanka today across multiple provinces

The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather advisory indicating that thundershowers and heavy rainfall are expected across several parts of Sri Lanka today. According to the forecast, showers or thundershowers will occur at intervals in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, and North-Western provinces, as well as in the Mannar District.

In the remaining regions, including the Central, North-Central, Eastern, and Uva provinces, showers or thundershowers are anticipated to develop after 1.00 p.m. due to active atmospheric conditions.

The Met Department further warns that fairly heavy rainfall of about 75 mm may occur at certain locations in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, and Uva provinces. Residents are urged to take necessary precautions to minimize the risk of localized flooding, lightning, and sudden strong winds often associated with evening thundershowers.

Misty conditions are also likely in parts of the Central, Sabaragamuwa, and Uva provinces during the early morning hours, which could reduce visibility and affect road travel. Motorists are advised to drive with caution, especially on hilly and wet roads.

The general public is encouraged to stay alert to weather updates and follow guidance from local authorities and disaster management units. Outdoor activities should be planned carefully, particularly during afternoon and evening hours when thunderstorm activity is expected to intensify.

Today’s weather conditions highlight the onset of the inter-monsoon period, bringing scattered rainfall and localized thundershowers across many regions of the island.
