News Today: Sri Lanka launches a Time-Based Tariff Scheme for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to advance a cleaner and smarter energy system nationwide.
In a historic move to accelerate Sri Lanka’s transition toward a cleaner and smarter energy system, the Government has officially approved the introduction of a Time-Based Tariff Scheme for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) integrated with Rooftop Solar Photovoltaic (RTSPV) installations.
This pioneering initiative is designed to transform how renewable energy is managed and consumed across the island. Under the new scheme, solar power producers will be encouraged to install battery energy storage systems that can store surplus electricity generated during daytime hours. This stored energy can then be released to the national grid during evening peak demand periods—between 6.30 p.m. and 10.30 p.m.—helping balance supply and demand efficiently.
By enabling this energy-shifting mechanism, Sri Lanka will significantly reduce its dependence on expensive and environmentally harmful fossil fuel-based power generation. Moreover, this measure will enhance grid stability, improve overall energy resilience, and promote the integration of renewable sources into the national power mix.
Officials emphasized that this tariff model marks a crucial milestone in the nation’s clean energy journey. It supports both household and commercial solar producers by offering economic incentives for sustainable practices, ensuring that green energy investments deliver long-term benefits.
The Time-Based Tariff Scheme is also expected to attract private sector participation in renewable technology and drive innovation within the local energy market. As global trends shift toward smart grids and battery-backed renewables, Sri Lanka’s proactive approach positions it as a leader in South Asia’s sustainable energy transformation.
This forward-looking policy not only accelerates the country’s clean energy goals but also lays the foundation for a smarter, greener, and self-sufficient energy future—making the Time-Based Tariff Scheme for Battery Energy Storage Systems in Sri Lanka a truly groundbreaking step.
