Traders Resist Egg Price Drop, Restaurants Unable to Reduce Prices

News Today: Traders Refuse Egg Price Drop, Impacting Food Costs

Despite the recent drop in egg prices, traders have not been compliant, according to the All Island Canteen and Restaurant Owners’ Association (AICROA) and Jathika Paribhogika Peramuna (JPP). As a result, canteen and restaurant owners are unable to lower food prices. AICROA President Harshana Rukshan stated that they are willing to pass on the savings to customers by reducing the prices of popular egg-based dishes. Notably, egg rice and egg kottu will see a reduction of Rs. 40, egg rolls will drop by Rs. 20, rice and curry with eggs will decrease by Rs. 40, and egg rotti will come down by Rs. 30.

JPP President Asela Sampath also criticized the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) for corruption and urged the NPP government to take control of the administration. He called for amendments to the Consumer Act, requiring food establishments to display price lists, which would promote transparency.

However, N.K. Jayawardana, Chairman of the All Ceylon Bakery Owners’ Association (ACBOA), stated that while the egg price drop is welcome, bakery prices would not change unless wheat flour prices decrease. He highlighted that the costs of margarine, palm oil, and vegetables have risen, limiting the impact of egg price reductions.
