UNP Chairman Urges Leaders to Understand World Politics Amid US Tariffs

News Today: UNP Chairman Wajira Abeywardena on the Need for Expertise in World Politics to Address US Tariffs

UNP Chairman Wajira Abeywardena recently told reporters that Sri Lanka’s leaders need to have a deeper understanding of world politics when dealing with significant international matters, particularly the recent issue of the US imposing reciprocal tariffs on Sri Lanka. He emphasized that without such expertise, the country’s leadership risks damaging its relationship with global powers and facing economic setbacks.

Abeywardena expressed concern that it would be a “tragic” situation for Sri Lanka if the ruling party fails to grasp the complexities of global political affairs. He pointed out that Sri Lanka had faced its worst-ever economic crisis just two years ago, but under the leadership of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, the country was able to recover and restore normalcy.

The UNP Chairman also noted that only a few countries, including Sri Lanka, have been slapped with high tariffs. He commended Wickremesinghe for examining the issue and delivering a statement on it just a few days ago, highlighting his continued efforts to address the matter. Abeywardena also stressed that the government should be held accountable for their lack of preparation on such critical matters during the past six months.

He added that expertise in world political affairs is crucial, and it is why the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Sri Lanka was so significant. India, as Sri Lanka’s closest neighbor, has been an essential ally, providing much-needed assistance, including a USD 2 billion credit line during Sri Lanka’s financial crisis.

In conclusion, Abeywardena urged the current government to recognize the importance of informed leadership in global political dealings to navigate complex international challenges.
