UNP to Unveil Bold New Identity After LG Polls

News Today: UNP plans a fresh political direction post-elections

United National Party (UNP) is set to unveil a fresh new identity following the upcoming Local Government Elections, according to Kandy District Leader and former MP Navin Dissanayake. Speaking at a recent meeting held at the Kandy Post Office Auditorium, Dissanayake emphasized the party’s need to reconnect with Sri Lanka’s younger generation through a novel political strategy and modern messaging.

He noted that many in today’s youth are unaware of the major contributions made by past UNP leaders such as J. R. Jayewardene, R. Premadasa, Gamini Dissanayake, and Lalith Athulathmudali. As such, the party aims to roll out a youth-focused programme to reclaim its relevance and influence in the current political landscape.

Dissanayake also praised former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, highlighting his leadership in steering Sri Lanka out of bankruptcy. “Wickremesinghe is the only leader with a clear vision to move the country forward,” he said. Reflecting on the previous presidential election, he acknowledged that the split within the UNP, where both Ranil and Sajith Premadasa contested separately, ultimately led to a shared defeat.

He expressed regret over the continued division within the party, stating that Sajith Premadasa’s breakaway has weakened both sides, making it difficult for either faction to secure a win. However, with a rejuvenated image and renewed strategy post-elections, the UNP hopes to rebuild unity and attract new support.
