News Today: The Attorney General confirms urgent measures to combat rising air pollution in Sri Lanka.
The Attorney General has assured the Court of Appeal that authorities, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, will take urgent and necessary measures to combat rising air pollution levels across Sri Lanka, including in the Jaffna District.
This statement was made during a hearing of the writ petition filed by Dr. Umasugi Nadarajah, a medical practitioner, which was taken up before a two-judge Bench of the Court of Appeal, consisting of Acting President Justice Mohammed Laffar and Justice K.M.S. Dissanayake.
The Court of Appeal had previously instructed the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) to conduct an assessment of the air quality in Jaffna and present its findings. Complying with this directive, the CEA has submitted its report, revealing that air quality in several regions across the country is currently below satisfactory levels.
As concerns over air pollution grow, environmentalists and medical professionals continue to warn about its harmful effects on public health. Rising pollution levels contribute to respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, and other long-term health risks. The government is now under increased pressure to enforce stricter environmental regulations, implement emission control measures, and promote sustainable practices to address this crisis.
With the Attorney General’s commitment to reducing pollution, citizens await concrete action plans and policy implementations to ensure cleaner air for future generations.
