News Today: Heavy Showers and Landslide Warning Issued
The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued a red warning for heavy showers and potential landslides in several districts due to an atmospheric disturbance near Sri Lanka. Heavy showers over 150mm are expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa Provinces, as well as the Galle and Matara districts, within the next 24 hours. The south-western part of the island will see enhanced rainfall over the coming days, with fairly heavy showers above 75mm likely in multiple areas.
Thundershowers are predicted in the evening or night across the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, and North-Western Provinces. The National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued landslide warnings for Dodangoda, Bulathsinhala, Mathugama, Horana, and Wallawita in the Kalutara district, and a Level II landslide warning for Nagoda and Elpitiya in the Galle district, as well as Akuressa in the Matara district.
Residents in high-risk areas should remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to avoid disaster.
