Urgent Weather Alert: Heavy Rain and Winds Expected Today

News Today: Meteorology Department Issues Weather Alert

The Meteorology Department of Sri Lanka has issued an urgent weather alert, warning of showers or thundershowers across several provinces. The alert indicates that the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-western provinces, as well as the Galle, Matara, Kandy, and Nuwara-Eliya districts, are expected to experience intermittent rainfall. In particular, certain areas in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, along with the Galle and Matara districts, are predicted to face heavy showers exceeding 100 mm.

Additionally, the Eastern and Uva provinces may experience showers or thundershowers in a few places, especially during the evening or night. Alongside the heavy rainfall, the Meteorology Department forecasts strong winds ranging from 40 to 50 kmph. These strong winds are expected to affect the Western slopes of the central hills, as well as the Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces. The Hambantota and Trincomalee districts are also likely to experience these strong gusts.

In light of these adverse weather conditions, the general public is strongly advised to take necessary precautions to minimize potential damage caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning, which are likely to occur during thundershowers. Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor objects that could become projectiles in strong winds and to stay indoors during thunderstorms to avoid being struck by lightning.

Furthermore, an additional advisory has been issued regarding the sun’s position. From today until September 6th, the sun will be directly overhead in Sri Lanka due to its apparent southward relative motion. This astronomical phenomenon is expected to result in increased temperatures, especially in areas directly under the sun’s path. Residents are advised to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours to prevent heat-related illnesses.

The Meteorology Department continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary. All citizens are urged to stay informed about weather developments and to follow any further instructions or advisories issued by local authorities. This proactive approach can help reduce risks and ensure the safety of individuals and communities across the country.
