US Ambassador Refutes Travel Ban Rumors

News Today: US Ambassador Clarifies No Travel Ban on Sri Lanka for US Citizens

US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung, recently clarified that there has never been a travel ban imposed on Sri Lanka for United States (US) citizens. During a press briefing, Chung addressed misinformation circulating about an alleged travel ban, stating it was entirely false and baseless. Instead, she explained that the US Embassy issued a security alert last week, advising American citizens to exercise caution and avoid the Arugam Bay area due to a specific security threat.

Chung emphasized the Embassy’s responsibility to inform US citizens, embassy staff, and the host government of any security concerns. She noted, “We do not follow a double policy. It is an accepted global method for us to relay such alerts wherever there may be a threat.” Following this protocol, the Embassy shared information with Sri Lankan authorities, who responded swiftly.

Highlighting the strong US-Sri Lanka partnership, Chung mentioned daily exchanges with Sri Lankan officials, working closely to ensure the safety of citizens and tourists. She praised the Sri Lankan government for its dedication to safety and transparency, stressing that the collaboration reflects mutual respect and commitment. Chung concluded by reaffirming that the overall travel advisory for Sri Lanka remains at Level 2, consistent with the advisory levels for various European countries over the years.
