Viral Disease Spreads Rapidly Among Pigs, Hogs

News Today: Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Viral Disease Spreading Fast

Health authorities in Sri Lanka have issued a warning regarding the rapid spread of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) among pigs, hogs, and boars. This viral disease has raised concerns, particularly in areas such as Yala, Chilaw, and Balapitiya, where outbreaks have been identified. Dr. Tharaka Prasad, Director of Health at the Department of Wildlife Conservation, emphasized that precautionary measures are being implemented to control the disease’s spread.

Speaking to Legacy Daily, Dr. Prasad clarified that while there is no evidence of PRRS affecting humans, the impact on pig farms could be severe. Lower pork production is a significant concern, and authorities are working closely with farms to prevent further economic losses.

PRRS primarily affects the respiratory and reproductive systems of pigs, leading to issues such as stillbirths and weak piglets. The disease spreads through direct contact and is highly contagious among swine populations. Dr. Prasad advised pig farmers to maintain strict hygiene protocols and to seek veterinary assistance if they observe symptoms in their livestock.

Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely and are urging pig farmers and the public to remain vigilant. Although the disease does not pose a direct threat to humans, its impact on livestock farming and the pork industry could have long-term consequences.
